Say Hello... Derek McDonald-Lee
Name: Derek McDonald-Lee
Role: Designer
Since: 26th September 2022
For those who don’t know give us a quick rundown of what you do:
All sorts of design! I develop ideas into visuals.
From pencil to pixels and print, I get to work on a wide variety of subjects - logos, layouts, icons, typography.
Anything that makes a brand look good.
Favourite aspect of your job:
There's no knowing how long the creative process will take you. It's a journey to work through the ideas, experimenting with different ways of approaching problems. When you hit that lightbulb moment it feels like everything falls into place.
I'm grateful to always be learning.
What do you like doing when you’re not in the studio?
I love to surf, even in the freezing north sea. My internet history says I check the swell forecasts more than I'm in the water though.
When the surf is flat you'll often find me in the kitchen where I enjoy cooking and also brewing my own beer - Mango pale ale is the winner so far.
Tell us a wee something about you that folks might not know and/or care about.
Music was a large part of my childhood, playing percussion (drums) with a number of different groups.
Biggest gig - Royal Albert Hall with a brass band.
Most fun gigs - Tiny Dundee pubs with my band 'Acemaster Faceblaster' (how could it be bad with a band name like that?)
Lastly - what’s your guilty pleasure:
Rebecca Black's song Friday
